18 Jul 07: Namesco bought by Dada
Founded in 1996, Namesco is now the fourth largest provider in the UK of domain names and hosting services and among the top 50 worldwide (source: Netcraft Company Analysis, January 2007). Based in Worcester and with offices in London, Namesco employs 60 highly qualified professionals and manages roughly 265,000 domains.

Already a major player in both Italy and Spain in Internet and domain & hosting, Dada is moving forward to strengthen its leadership in the European market with an eye toward continued international expansion.

“Following the acquisition of the Spanish company Nominalia in August 2006, Dada’s purchase of Namesco is part of Dada Group’s expansion strategy, indicating Dada's priority in strengthening its presence in the professional online services business” commented Paolo Barberis, Chairman of Dada. “The investments in the domain and hosting sector which is represented by the Dada.pro division and already characterized by a solid international customer base, will allow Dada to further expand its offer towards more and more advanced services for companies and professionals online presence in a Web 2.0 perspective”.

In the first quarter of 2007 the Dada.pro division (made up of Register.it, nominalia and Namesco) headed by Claudio Corbetta recorded a turnover of 3.9 million euros (equal to 11% of consolidated revenues for the Dada Group), an EBITDA of 1.1 million and an EBIT of 840,000. With the acquisition of Namesco the total number of clients in the Dada.pro division rises to 200,000 while domains grow to over 700,000, of which over 60% are international.

Kevin Savage, Managing Director and Jason Smith, Operations Director will continue to run Namesco – now the UK division of Dada.pro with a view to expansion through increased marketing initiatives and through acquisitions. All operations of Namesco including staffing remain wholly unaffected and it’s business as usual.

In a recent independent study conducted by the consumer price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com Namesco was named as one of the top 4 ISPs for service overall scoring 9 out of 10 marks for Customer Service, Technical Support, speed, billing and reliability!

Moneysupermarket’s poll asked the opinions of over 4500 consumers, and concluded that many of the large marketing driven ISPs have been unable to cope with demand for their “free packages” which has negatively affected service levels. As a result, the survey found that broadband users enjoy a better experience with smaller specialist providers such as Namesco.

We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting submission applications for .EU domain names. The registration process will take place across three phases between December 7th 2005 and April 7th 2006 – we are now accepting applications to be submitted to the queue for each phase; Sunrise 1, Sunrise 2 and Landrush. We will hold your application and it will be submitted to the appropriate queue, the moment the registry phase opens.

The fee for Sunrise applications is £129.99+VAT, which includes administration and registry fees for the first year of registration; successfully registered domains will renew annually at only £34.99+VAT. Landrush applications are charged at £1+VAT, with successful registrations being charged at £24.99+VAT for the first year.

26 Apr 04: Network Upgrades
Planning ahead is routine here at Namesco Limited not least for our Senior Network Managers. As we continue to grow at pace, we must upgrade and expand our Hosting Network Infrastructure.

Back in Autumn 2003, predictions showed that by the beginning of May 2004, we would require a significant upgrade to our master storage device (which holds web site data and backups) and our mail servers (so they can process and deliver more mail, more quickly).

Therefore, over the last 6 months, we have been carefully investigating and more recently testing new top-end Storage Hardware. A solution was purchased from one of the industry leaders in Storage Devices in March 2004 for £83,000 and is the highest performing NAS (Network Attached Storage) system in its class.

It is due to be integrated into our hosting Infrastructure in Telehouse London over the next 2 weeks and will significantly improve web site access speeds and mail delivery speeds.

There are 2 important points to make regarding this investment:

1) The new storage device and our resultant enhanced network infrastructure puts us in a powerful position and many steps ahead of most other companies providing similar web services. It allows us to further enhance and develop our hosting and e-mail offerings while at the same time delivering vastly improved access times and mail delivery transmission speeds.

2) The £83,000 spent on this new hardware was paid for out of Namesco's own cash reserves. This is crucial in your decision to become a new customer or to remain as one as it is stands testament to our sound business, ongoing sustainability and investment to improve all-round customer services.

There are an increasing number of misleading renewal reminder letters and e-mails being sent to Namesco customers' that are causing confusion to some. They are primarily from 'EU Registry Services' and 'Domain Registry of America'.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has responded to the growing shortage of realistically useable domain names and are creating 7 new gTLDs, .biz, .info, .pro, .aero, .coop, .museum and .name.

The .biz new top-level domain name is specifically for business use and has been described by some as "the new dot com". It is particularly useful to companies that missed out in registering their preferred .com name previously.

Applications can be submitted for .biz domains, at just £5.99+VAT each, until 17th September 2001. Applicants wishing to increase their chances of their .biz domains being selected during the randomised selection process should submit multiple applications for potentially popular domain names up to the 17th September 2001.

Names.co Internet plc is continually developing and enhancing its registration and domain maintenance system. Launched today is a further addition to speed up domain name transfers.

Via your 'Account' you can now change the DNS of many types of domain names in real time. Depending upon the domain name you are modifying, the system automatically detects which registrar to send the modify request template to. This gets sent to the registry once you have submitted the request.

It can then take anything up to 48 hours for the new DNS information to resolve (become active) on the Internet.

Furthermore, for those of you that have your own servers, you can set-up your own default DNS info in your 'Account' so that all domain names registered through it will use these settings.

26 Mar 01: Farmers in Crisis Fund - AUCTION
Camilla Coxe, whose family sold their cattle farm in 1992 following the BSE crisis and the downturn in farming, persuaded her bosses to donate 20 'cherished' web addresses - the online equivalent of personalised number plates.

The sale of names like sex, business, commerce, football, money and travel.eu.com, begins today.

Camilla's company - London-based CentralNic - has already had several ''serious'' inquiries from potential buyers.

Operations Manager Camilla, whose brother is currently at Cirencester Agricultural College, said: "I have been moved to tears by the daily footage of fields which have become funeral pyres.

I was desperate to do something to help and this seemed like a perfect opportunity." All proceeds from the auction will go to the National Farmers Union, who will distribute the money via the union's Supporting Farmers in Crisis Fund.

NFU President Ben Gill said: "We are very grateful that CentralNic have chosen to support the farmers in this way".

"The suffering among the farming community at present is immeasurable. "The one shining light that is keeping people going through the crisis is the support and good will that they have received from the public. "Any money donated to the NFU's fund will go directly to those most in need."

01 Feb 01: .co.uk's on the up!
Nominet, the registration body for the country code .uk have seen their first month on month rise in registration volumes since March 2000 when 245967 .uk domain names were registered. Since then, the monthly registration volumes have been decreasing. With the domin name registrations drying up, it has caused a number of smaller domain name registrtion companies to go out of business. Many customers have lost critical web based services such as e-mail accounts and web sites.

The total number of .uk registrations for January 2001 was 79,440 compared to 67,204 in December 2000.

However, is this just a one off rise in registration volumes or is this the beginning of a longer term 'pick up' in domain regitsrations in the .uk name space?

What are the new TLDs?
There are 7 new TLDs. Each was proposed by an individual organization or business, and they include:

.biz - JVTeam LLC, proposed a suffix specifically for businesses. ICANN found it the strongest of several .biz proposals. It is unclear at this point how the company would handle requests from individuals and non-business groups.

.pro - RegistryPro Ltd. proposed .pro for professionals. For example, physician John Doe could register as johndoe.med.pro. If John Doe were a lawyer, he could register as johndoe.law.pro. Individuals would have to prove their professional status.

.info - Afilias LLC, a consortium of 19 registration companies, proposed .info as a truly global option for general information, as most .com registrations are in the United States.

.name - The Global Name Registry Ltd. proposed a category for individuals. It would reserve second-level names such as smith.name and let individuals register john.smith.name or betty.smith.name. It is not clear at this point how the company would deal with multiple individuals named John Smith.

.museum - The Museum Domain Management Association, a group created through the International Council of Museums, proposed the suffix for accredited museums worldwide.

.coop - The National Cooperative Business Association proposed a special designation for business cooperatives such as credit unions and rural electric coops. The suffix would be available for members of the group and its counterparts worldwide.

.aero - Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques, an international aviation group, proposed .air for the airlines, airports, computer reservation systems and related industries. ICANN countered with .aero as an alternative that could be more globally recognized.

What impact will these new domains have?
With some 20 million dotcom names registered worldwide, easy-to-remember addresses have been almost completely used up, resulting in many calling for new TLDs to be put in place. But the implementation of these new TLDs has received mixed reviews. Industries seeking expansion applaud the new TLDs, while those that believe ICANN unfairly favors large corporate interests over individual Internet users are criticizing these latest developments. This clash of beliefs has resulted in several protests against ICANN and their new regulations.

These new TLDs are expected to initiate a new Internet land rush, with speculators and trademark holders competing to claim the best names first in this first-come, first-serve marketplace.

While the new TLDs will ease the congestion for commercial domain owners, some are speculating that names under .COM are likely to remain the names of choice, due to the worldwide establishment of them. However, the new Domains under .biz, .coop, etc., will be just as functional and soon universally recognized.

When will these new TLDs be in place?
At this time, there is no definitive time set. ICANN must now negotiate contracts with companies or groups that made the winning TLD proposals. The company administrators then need to coordinate, design and develop the technology needed for the shared database/repository information, and officials haven't put firm dates on the availability of registration services. However, they are expected to be in place by the end of Q2, 2001.

Will current domain name owners be given special registration preference?
No. It depends on the rules put in place by the TLD Registry. Some may impose a period of time for trademark holders to register first. Other rules may require compliance with the form of TLD. An example - only aerospace companies can register .aero. Otherwise these new TLDs will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis to anyone that wants to register them. Even the domain name you want is already registered by someone else in a com/net/org, you still have the opportunity to register it in one of the new TLDs. However, if you successfully register a domain name in one of the new TLDs that is currently trademarked by an individual or company with an existing com/net/org, your domain name registrations could be challenged by that individual or company. Second level domains in the new gTLDs that embody existing trademark rights may be held only by the owner of the trademark rights. If you register a Domain Name in any of the new gTLDs that embodies trademark rights owned by another person, the registration will be subject to cancellation if the trademark owner brings a challenge under the dispute settlement regime.

Will more TLDs be put into place in the future?
Adding suffixes to the Internet is akin to adding area codes to the national phone system to accommodate the growing number of customers. For this reason, more TLDs are expected in the future, although ICANN has thus far avoided such questions as to when and how more new TLDs will be implemented.
